Thrive is the only organization in Hamilton whose services and programs focus exclusively on helping children and youth who have been sexually victimized, children exhibiting concerning sexualized behaviours and children within the same family who are engaging with each other in concerning sexualized behaviours - and their non-offending parents/caregivers and families.
We also offer Hamilton's only mental health trauma treatment program for immigrant and refugee children and youth, and their families. We are recognized as the community experts in providing evidence based assessment, intervention and treatment services.
OASIS Program Clinical Therapist: Purpose of Position
OASIS, a program of Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services in Hamilton, is seeking a contractor in the capacity of Children’s Mental Health Counsellors, who while utilizing a culturally sensitive lens, will compassionately provide general mental health, trauma assessment and counselling services to immigrant and refugee children, youth and their families. The position requires a commitment of one day or two half days per week, as scheduled in consultation with families; and a willingness to travel off site (to locations other than the main office), within Hamilton.
Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services utilizes a multi-modal, culturally/racially sensitive approach in order to provide clinical service to children, youth, and their family members. Clinical services/treatment may involve a combination of individual, family, and group therapy. The Clinical Therapist assumes direct responsibility for the provision of case planning, which may include community partnering:
- Provides case planning by performing such tasks as:
- Conduct complex trauma assessments related to immigrant and refugee experiences of war, migration, resettlement, and other contributing factors;
- Provide treatment/counselling, education and support strategies and techniques which are culturally sensitive, appropriate, and respectful of ethnic backgrounds;
- Provide individual and family therapy and case management (in accordance to clinical best practice) to children, youth, and their family members who are obtaining service at Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services;
- Participate in formulation of treatment plans and regularly review treatment goals/plans;
- Utilize interpreters to support immigrant and refugee children's treatment and healing in their first language;
- Ensure best practice in the delivery of counselling services;
- Liaise with community partners;
- When required, advocate for the needs and rights of their clients/families;
- Discharge planning;
- To act as a resource to the OASIS program (e.g. providing consultation, training, etc.);
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Provides clinical/treatment services:
- Provide evidence-based culturally/racially appropriate individual and family therapy;
- Participate in regular peer and individual supervision;
- Attend educational/training sessions (when required) in order to carry-out duties as an OASIS Program Clinical Therapist;
- Participate in professional development activities to ensure a high level of knowledge (i.e. attendance at meetings, conferences, trainings etc.);
- Support research projects and program evaluation.
- Participate in OASIS Program team meetings;
- Support the data collection and management to ensure the data meets the agency’s requirements;
- Maintenance of clinical records and appropriate recording of case-related activities in accordance with professional regulations/standards, or agency polices;
Qualifications, Clinical Knowledge, and Skills:
- Post graduate degree in psychology, social work or related field;
- Membership in a regulated college or professional organization (e.g. Ontario College of Social Work and Social Service Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario);
- Proof of professional liability insurance;
- Criminal Reference Check -Vulnerable Sector Screening satisfactory to Thrive;
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in providing mental health counselling to children and families;
- Sound knowledge of clinical best practices in the area of working with culturally diverse populations, and, in particular, immigrant and refugee families, with cultural sensitivity to unique issues facing this population;
- Strong knowledge in applicable theories and evidence-based treatment modalities;
- Knowledge of relevant community programs, support services, resources and organizations, including settlement and integration agencies, in the Hamilton area;
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a clinical team;
- Ability to work with children/youth in groups and experience in educational settings an asset;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, problem solving, advocacy and crisis management skills;
- Commitment to working within an anti-racism/anti oppression framework;
- Literacy in a language other than English definitely an asset.

Mental Health Worker – Racialized Youth
Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services forms part of Hamilton’s Child and Youth Mental Health service delivery sector. We provide professional assessment and trauma treatment services, as well as prevention and educational programs.
Our treatment programs include comprehensive assessment and specialized treatment for children and youth in the Hamilton community who have been sexually abused, have been involved in intrafamilial sexual abuse (children and youth within the same family), or those who are exhibiting concerning sexualized behaviours. We also offer services to address the unique needs of refugee and immigrant children and youth experiencing trauma symptoms or significant acculturation stress as well as support to their families.
The primary responsibility of the Racialized Mental Health Worker will be to contribute to the achievement of the following core program functions: engagement and relationship-building; intake and screening; specialized assessment; care planning, clinical intervention and follow up; transition support, system navigation, advocacy and referral; consultation, education and support; program and system development; and service and program evaluation.
The goal of this program is to provide mental health and addiction services to Racialized and Indigenous young people and support them overcoming barriers of access to mainstream services in Hamilton, as well as building the capacity of mainstream providers to provide better services to diverse populations (taking an intersectional approach).
The Mental Health Worker is a mobile position that is part of a small specialized interdisciplinary team that meets racialized youth in non-traditional and community-based settings.
Qualifications, Clinical Knowledge, and Skills:
- Degree/diploma in social work, psychology, psycho-therapy or related health or social science field
- Registered or eligible for registration with an accredited regulatory college
- Demonstrated knowledge and practiced skills in working with racialized children and youth with mental health difficulties
- Knowledge and experience of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices
- Knowledge of and experience with youth-specific clinical interventions and approaches (eg. youth engagement and youth-centered care)
- Strong knowledge in applicable theories and evidence-based treatment modalities;
- Understanding of related/applicable legal and legislative procedures (CFSA, PHIPA, YCJA, );
- Ability to function within a collaborative and multidisciplinary team;
- Sound verbal and written communication and computer skills, competent with all MS office applications
- Ability and willingness to work with clients in both virtual and in person counselling sessions and flexibility in scheduling counselling appointments based on client availability
- Maintain confidentiality and release of information in accordance with regulatory body and Thrive’s policy at all
- Obligation to review and always commit to the application of organizational policies and procedures
- Maintains an active clinical caseload providing specialized assessments, consultations, clinical interventions, follow-up and a discharge plan. Through engagement and assessment, the worker strives to understand the needs and strengths of Racialized youth. Works in collaboration with the family to define a support plan that connects the youth to services they
- Formulates client-centered treatment recommendations that are in alignment with the program goals. Reviews and evaluates the recommendations, treatment, care/service plan in consultation with the client, family and other service providers. Takes a holistic and youth-centered approach to care planning that identifies client strengths and addresses barriers to accessing care, including systemic racism
- Develops services and treatment plans jointly with team members (Thrive and partner agency staff) and in collaboration with youth and family. Works closely with team members (Thrive and partner agency staff) to identify and develop strategies/linkages to address any additional support and education needs of the client, family and services
- Directly monitors the client’s progress and response through the assessment/treatment phases of services and identifies any significant changes in the client’s status and needs appropriately through communicating with care partners. Identifies needs for additional consultation and/or referral to other services and support the client in accessing
- Is aware of and assesses for aspects of risk and intervenes as appropriate. Provides secondary support to crisis intervention services, as
- Documents all findings and interventions in a clear and concise manner in the client’s clinical record. Maintains records and statistics as requiried by the program, and
- Participates in the planning, delivery, implementation and evaluation of local, regional and provincial strategies or initiatives ( g. clinical, academic, research). Collaborates with care and service partners to identify, plan and implement capacity building needs pertaining to the target population.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining a level of knowledge conducive to confident and competent functioning within racialized youth populations and
- Identifies and addresses needs within racialized youth communities and effects change within the system through providing capacity-building trainings to community partners and active participation on community
- Participates and actively contributes to program evaluation and research base activities as appropriate
- Knowledgeable of the history and effects of systemic racism on racialized youth and their ability to access mental health and addictions supports. Demonstrates awareness of social justice movements and anti-racism movements and the effects of white supremacist groups on racialized
- Provides mobile services in community-based and non-traditional
- Identifies, develops and implements a plan to work toward achieving team and personal learning and development goals with an emphasis on anti-racist and anti-oppressive
- Participates in clinical and administrative team meetings, special projects, continuous quality improvement activities, research and program development, as required by
- Actively contributes to orientation and clinical mentoring of new staff, seconded staff, clinical placement students and other identified learners
- Encourages and challenges other team members in the pursuit of continued learning and quality improvement, especially in the areas of anti-racism and anti-oppressive practice. Works collaboratively with other team members demonstrating creativity, flexibility, respect and

- Participates in clinical and administrative team meetings, special projects, quality improvement processes as required as part of Thrive and participates at community tables representing Thrive’s interests.
